Fellowship in Leadership


The Center for Leadership offers a competitive Fellowship in Leadership for Ph.D. students and for high potential staff who work with Northwestern students.

If selected for the Fellowship, you will develop your capacity for leadership and for developing leadership in others. You’ll work collaboratively with program faculty and staff in an environment that fosters deep learning through experimentation, risk taking, academic inquiry and real world problem solving. On completion of the program, each Fellow is designated as a Northwestern University Leadership Coach.

Specific benefits and activiites for Fellows include:

  • Learning how to effectively coach and develop undergraduate students for leadership roles. This includes instruction on how to assess students’ leadership abilities, and how to construct and monitor individual leadership development plans
  • Participating in a yearlong workshop and seminar series on coaching and leadership led by experienced practitioners and researchers. This includes introduction to the major theories, thinkers and frameworks of leadership and leadership coaching
  • Introduction to the University’s leadership learning domain model
  • Working in small teams on leadership projects that advance the Center's service, teaching and research missions
  • Teaching and adivsing a lab section of undergraduate students in the "Paradigms and Strategies of Leadership" course in the fall quarter.

In addition, Ph.D. students receive a $3,000 stipend (with additional funding available for a Program Coordinator and Leadership Portal Coordinator).

Governance & Funding

The Fellowship is funded by the Center for Leadership, The Graduate School, the Vice President for Student Affairs, and the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education.  The Steering Committee members are:
